Process Post: Aider- Vending Machine

Project Goal

Design a vending machine or unmanned kiosk business that provides people with valuable products and services. The business must have a solid business proposition and address a pertinent need for a target audience.

Camping areas or mountains are relatively remote, which is difficult to find stores if campers or hikers forget to bring necessities or encounter danger.

Original Business- Beeping Camping Vending Machine

  • The target audience for this vending machine is hikers, campers, or help-seekers including people chased by wild animals, drowning, or in an emergency health situation.

  • Mainly generated by solar energy, beeping camping vending machines provide campers and hikers with survival necessities, medical supplies, lifebuoy, and alarms to offer people help in remote areas.

  • The products sold in this machine including water, nutrition bar, tent, portable bench, swiss knife, battery, lighter, and other necessities and tools.

  • Although the alarm and lifebuoy are free for people who need help, people can donate freely to support the business if the vending machine saves their lives.

Process and Iterations

Mind Map

1st version: was accepting cashless payments that need to be online to connect to credit card service

2nd version: consider more on the sustainability and limited electricity that power the vending machine

Personas

1st version: persona for the potential user, EMT, and vending machine manager

2nd version: new persona for replenisher and revised potential user persona

Storyboards

1st version: Hiker was able to use a credit card to buy a plastic bottle of water from the vending machine

2nd version: Hiker pay by cash for filling water from the water fountain

3rd version: High-fidelity storyboards of user buying water

Customer Journey Map

1st version: Lack the motivation of donation and people’s experience after using the machine

2nd version: Since the user is happy with the purchase experience, the satisfaction motivates his donation

List of Actions

1st version: allow the hiker to use a credit card to buy a non-sustainable bottle of water

2nd version: substitute credit card to cash for payment and change bottled water to water fountain filling

Task Flows

1st version: tasks of discovering the vending machine, buying water, and donation

2nd version: focus more on how the customer can do with the vending machine

Ecosystem Map

1st version: the map looks busy and does not determine products sold in different areas

2nd version: Add more actors and make the ecosystem map cleaner

Taxonomy Map

1st version: lack one depth levels

2nd version: show all 4 depth levels

3rd version: add pricing to the products and water

Visual Mockups

1st version: lack environment background and in an appropriate size with lifebuoy, keyboards, and coin insert

2nd version: fix the size with lifebuoy, keyboards, and coin insert. The yellow emergency call button is misleading

3rd version: fix the misleading color of the emergency call button.

4th version: add the environment background and person

5th version: make the mockups more realistic by adding the environmental light on the vending machine
